Mission Statement:  The mission of the South Hero Conservation Commission is to help preserve the town’s natural beauty and rural character by promoting a better understanding and appreciation for the natural, scenic, recreational, historic, educational, cultural, architectural, woodland, agricultural, and archeological resources, and by collaborating with the public and town officials to value and manage these resources for the benefit of current and future generations.

Green Up South Hero: This Saturday, May 4!

Green Up South Hero takes place on Saturday, May 4th. Many participants have received route assignments, and you may notice that some “early birds” have already started cleaning up roadsides.

But it’s not too late to help Green Up our roadsides and public spaces! Volunteers are still needed to clean up along some portions of Route 2, Ferry Road, and at the Town Beach. Please email the South Hero Conservation Commission at [email protected] with any Green Up Day questions.

Keeler’s Bay Variety has graciously offered to help distribute Green Up bags during regular store hours, so if you weren’t yet assigned a route and you’d like to help, stop by KBV this week and pick up a Green Up bag!

Tie up your full bags, and leave them at the side of the road. (Please DO NOT bring full bags to the Town Garage.) We have another group of volunteers to pick up the green bags along the roadside starting on Saturday.  Remember to prioritize safety while cleaning up around town. Wear bright, visible clothing, and gloves, and always face oncoming traffic. (Only adults should handle needles.) Also, be sure to check for ticks afterward.

South Hero Land Trust (SHLT) is hosting a clean-up and tree-planting event at the South Hero Rec Park this Saturday from 9 am to 11 am on Green Up Day. This is a great option for families with young children who may want to avoid being along a road and as an overflow event for anyone not assigned a road section. Please RSVP for the Rec Park event here: http://shlt.org/events/gud2024.

After the Green Up Day clean-up, SHLT will host their annual free Volunteer Appreciation BBQ from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at Folsom School. Vegan, vegetarian, and GF options will be available, and all are welcome to come together, enjoy some delicious food, and celebrate the community!
