South Hero Recreation Commission 5/13/2021

MINUTES

In Attendance: Dave Hobbs, Linda Burger, Carol Tremble, Phil Scott

Not In Attendance: Tree Cononi, Chuck Hulse

Public Attendance: Guy Maguire (South Hero Land Trust Representative)

I) Meeting minutes from April 17th Meeting acknowledged. No comments.

II) Recreation Survey: Phil Scott reported on the results of the recreation survey posted in Front Porch Forum. We had over 50 responses, but the free version of surveymonkey only lets us see up to 40 responses. Phil will send over responses to the committee to be attached to the minutes, see below. Summary of results: Outdoor activities were very popular, with interest in biking activities, kayak lessons, swim lessons, boater safety, outdoor gardening, a brewery tour of Two Hero’s Brewery, as well as some write-ins. South Hero Recreation Commission Community Survey-1

III) Discussion of scholarships for rec programs in other towns: The group discussed getting the word out about offering scholarships for swim lessons in North Hero and Colchester. Linda will check about pricing and availability. North Hero is full, but Colchester has room, and is cheaper. Linda will talk with Erin Morse to get those opportunities posted to residents.

IV) Summer Camps: Linda reported that no teachers she talked too were interested in summer camps, but instead the group considered one-day events such as biking tours for kids, kayak lessons, etc. Guy mentioned that SHLT is offering two week-long nature and garden summer camps at Folsom this summer, a geocaching adventure in conjunction with the library and the historical society, as well as nature walks and other outdoor activities for youth and adults this summer. Guy will send those to Erin to post on the town’s recreation website once they are available. Carol offered to lead a biking tour for kids. The group discussed getting bikes for kids who don’t have them, making sure lack of bikes is not a barrier to access. Phil is working with a contact to offer a boating safety class, and will get back with more info.

V) Other matters: Carol – we hired a port-a-let for the beach, and her and Luke Tremble will manage the buoys and other equipment. The security company has been hired for the summer.

The Try-athalon is on hold for now, to be discussed at the next meeting.

Next meeting: A special meeting is set for June 10th at 6pm, before the Trails Subcommittee at 7pm
